GLT 300 OMO VALLEY: the real experience with nature and people

omo1We want to propose this particular Omo valley trip Going to sleep to the Mursi, Muguji, Oromo & Borena people villages; walking to the Netch Sar National park and at the Bale mountains & Elsod crater; walk & have time at the Hamer, Karo & Nyangatom people villages; visit well the Dassanech people villages and Turkana lake, after having experienced the life of the different tribes along the Omo river, the only affluent of the lake.
We use very good camping materials, igloo type tents, portable shower & toilets with tent to protect as possibly our clients privacy & comfort, excellent kitchen and table materials, with cooks preparing delicious meals; but sleeping as much as possible in or next to the different people villages, to experience their way of life and culture, and learn from how they leave a such simple life, along with respect of nature The vehicles are very good for the roads we’ll use and different models, based on the budget and request of the clients.

1. ADDIS ABABA Arrival Addis Ababa. Meet the guide at the airport. Transfer hotel. Rest. Afternoon tour of Addis. ON htl
2. BALE MOUNTAINS; We drive to the Bale mountains, via Sodore, admiring Awash river, a bath in the hot water swimming pool and lunch. We so proceed via Asela to the Bale National park. ON camping Dinsho.
3.BALE MOUNTAINS; View of spectacular fauna & flora at the Bale mountains. Morning drive & walk at Sanete plateau, with afro-alpine vegetable & the chance to spot the endemic Semien fox. After a lunch box, drive to the Tuludimtu forest for very nice views, different flora and the chance to spot the endemic Mountain Nyala. Dinner & ON camping Harena forest.
4.BALE MOUNTAINS- OROMO PEOPLE; We proceed admiring very nice views and crossing the forest, and then visiting Oromo people villages (Oromo Sidamo & Oromo Bale) & their way of life. ON camping Dolo.
5.BORENA PEOPLE; Visiting Oromo people we reach Borena people & villages. Visit one village with particular traditions.

6. ELSOD CRATER, SINGING WELLS, KONSO PEOPLE; Early morning, around 6 am, we walk to the crater, to admire Borena people extracting salt from a marshy lake. When walking back to the crater, have breakfast. Visit singing wells around Elsod. Then we drive to Yabelo & have lunch box on the way. Proceed to Konso and visit one village. ON Kanta lodge or camping near to the king palace. In this case we have the chance to see his village and palace.
7. KEYAFER THURSDAY MARKET, JINKA, ARI PEOPLE, MURSI PEOPLE; We proceed to the Weyto river valley. Try to combine the program to be in Thursday to admire the KeyAfer market (of Tsemay & Erbore people). We proceed to Jinka admiring Ari people, & proceed to the Mago National park. Crossing the Neri river we reach the Mursi people village of Elwoha. ON camping.
8.MURSI & BODY PEOPLE; Full day for Mursi & Body people visiting their villages & culture, way of life & culture. With luck we look for the donga game (August, September & October). If time permits make a game drive in the late afternoon on the high mountains of the Mago park. ON camping Elwoha.
9. MUGUJI PEOPLE; We cross the Mago National park & proceed for the Muguji people & villages. With luck we’ll visit in the evening on of their dances. ON camping.
10.KARO, NYANGATOM, HAMMER PEOPLE; Visita Karo people villages of Lubuk or Duss & Kortcho. Proceed the to the Nyangatom (Bume) people crossing Omo river, at Kangate. Visit one of their villages, with very interesting cultures. Drive then to the Hamer people.

11. HAMER PEOPLE & VISIT TURMI MARKET; Full day visit Hamer people villages. Walk to a Hamer village; then proceed to the Monday market of Hamer, Karo & Dassanech people. With luck visit one of the Hamer people marriage ceremony with the bull jumping. And with luck the evening a Hamer people dance: the Evangadi. ON Evangadi lodge.
12. DASSANECH PEOPLE & VISIT TURKANA LAKE; We proceed to Omorate village, where we’ll visit Dassanech people. Then drive to the Turkana lake, visiting Incoreana people. Back late afternoon to Turmi.

14. LAGO CHAMO E PARCO DEL NETCH SAR; Morning drive to lake Chamo and then make a boat trip admiring crocodiles (the biggest in Africa with length over 7 meters), hippos and birds. Reach the other side of the lake and walk to the Netch Sar park. Visit many animals, as Swaynes Hartbeest, lesser kudu, zebras, birds & more. Reach the mountain top (“Yesghier dildi”, which means mountain of paradise) with spectacular view over Chamo & Abaya lakes and the Netch Sar park. Have lunch. 15.DORZE PEOPLE- LAKE LANGANO; Drive to the Dorze people, admiring their villages, and particular way of life and houses. And very nice views. Lunch box. Drive then to the Rift Valley of Langano. Dinner & ON Wenney ecolodge
16. LANGANO LAKE & ZWAY, TIYA & ADADI MARIAM- ADDIS ABABA; Relax at Langano. Possibility of trakking to Munessa forest, birdwatching, horseriding, cycling, fishing, swimming & more. Lunch. Drive then to Zway lake, Tiya steles & Adadi Mariam church. Reach late afternoon Addis Ababa. Dinner in traditional restaurant with folkloristic dances. Then transfer airport for departure.

GLT 310: OMO VALLEY 10 days

04. Enter into the Mago National park, admiring different mammals and birds on the way; and proceed to visit the Mursi people and villages. 05. Drive to Turmi, admiring Thursday very colorful KeyAfer village market of the Tsemay and Erbore people. Proceed then to visit the Hamer people. 06. Drive to visit the Karo people, for their very interesting decoration and scarification all over their body; and very nice views over Omo river from Kortcho village. 07. SAT. Proceed to Arbaminch, admiring on the way the very colorful Hamer, Karo and Dassanech people market at Dimeka village. Lunch box. Reach late afternoon Arbaminch. ON Swaynes htl.

GLT317, GUMZE, GANZO & other people of the NORTH-WEST 15 days

omo1-3This is a ***new*** expedition, never done before now. And can be done also before or after the Historic route; or after this you can extend to the Surma people or Omo valley.
01.THU. Beginning of the tour in Addis Ababa. Morning free. Afternoon (1400 hrs from the hotel) tour of the capital: visit Entoto mountains with views over the capital, the National museum, St George church. ON (overnight) chosen hotel.
02. Drive to visit the Debre Libanos monastery, the old Portuguese bridge and Jemma river valley. Spot also the endemic Gelada Baboons here. Proceed then crossing the Blue Nile valley to DebreMarkos. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON htl DebreMarkos.
03.SAT. Drive to Kossober to visit the Gojam and Agew people Saturday’s market. Then proceed to Chagni (60 km, 1 hrs) and Mandura (67 km, 1 hr driving) to admire another colorful market, this time of the Gumze and Agew people. Then drive back to Zengena lake for ON camping (lunch on the way; dinner at camp) 04.SUN. Drive to Dahans Baguna to admire a Gumze & Agew people market. Then proceed to very nice and traditional Agew people villages. Reach then the Blue Nile. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON camping at Shinashia, at a Agew people village.
05. Proceed to Guba (or also called Mankush) village, where you find also a previous palace of Dej Asmach Jemal, built during Emperor Menelik reign. Reach so Janga where you can admire the Blue Nile, before entering in Sudan, called here “Sirba Abay” (189 kms, 4 hrs). Proceed so to Sherkole where you can admire the Berta people, traditional gold miners, at work. (2 hrs drive). Then continue for the overnight at Asosa, at Mango campsite, among lot of Mango trees (lunch on way; dinner camp) 06.TUE. Morning drive to the Sudan border town of Kumruk (3 hrs), get the permits, and drive to Fametsere, where under a volcanic mountain (which they call the gold mountain and have many traditional believes) the Berta people extract salt. Proceed then to a traditional gold market, where you can admire the way they do their market. Afternoon proceed to admire the Bambasi village very colorful market of the Oromo, Mao & Komo. The Mao & Komo are very traditional tribes, with many scarification all over their body. The Mao men have scarification in the face & chest, while female on the belly. While the Komo on the front & face, while female on the belly. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON camp Asosa.
07. Drive to Ye’amsera village (Tongo region) & camp next to the mosque, built in 1952 by an Algerian coming from Saudi Arabia. Here in July (Arabian calendar on Mirage 27) there is a famous pilgrimage. Organize the permits & police escort and drive to the Ganzo people village. The Ganzo are the 81st tribe, just discovered few years ago. Are totally 150 members. Have scarification over their body, mainly the men in the face & chest; while female in the belly, arms & back. They hunt (warthog, alligators, monkeys, etc) and in the evening you’ll participate to dinner and dancing. Is a very particular experience. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON Ye’amsera camp. 08. Morning dedicated to the visit of the Ganzo people. Afternoon proceed to Asosa. On the way make a 1 hrs trek at Inzi, for very nice views over the region, and some villages. 09. Drive to Nekemte (341 kms, 8 hrs). On the way visit very nice views and Wollo people resettlements. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON camping or local hotel 10. Proceed to Gambela, at bank of Baro river, a previous famous commercial point with Sudan. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON in hotel.
11. Drive to the Nuer & Anuak people. With many scarification all over their body, leave at bank of Baro river, and are fishermen and hunters. ON next to a village 12. Visit villages; then proceed back to Gambela. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON htl.
13. Drive to Jima, with a stop to waterfalls on the way, for short walking too. Reach Jimma and visit the AbaJifar palace, old king house + the museum of all his artifacts & more, in town. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON htl.

GLT316, SURMA people & the western side of the OMO River 16 days

02. Cross coffee platations the the famous coffee regions, to proceed to Neketemte. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON in hotel.
03. Proceed to Gambela, at bank of Baro river, a previous famous commercial point with Sudan. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON in hotel.
04. Drive to the Nuer & Anuak people. With many scarification all over their body, leave at bank of Baro river, and are fishermen and hunters. ON next to a village.
05. Visit villages; then proceed back to Gambela. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON htl.
06. Drive south to MizanTeferi, admiring very big forest and nice views. Visit on the way very big forests and the Dizi people. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON camp.
07. Drive to the unique Surma people. Here women wear circular or trapezoidal shaped plates into their lips. Men have different scarification all over their body. With luck we’ll participate to a donga game, which is a stick fighting ritual. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON camp near to Tulgit.
08. Drive to Kibish, admiring very nice views. Then the Surma people around kibish. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON camping.
09. Drive to Adikas. Then proceed to the Omo National park. It is the biggest and richest of fauna park in Ethiopia. The vegetation is also very nice. Late afternoon game drive. Lunch on the way; dinner & ON camp.

02. Start your drive AM by going to visit the crater lakes of Debrezeith and the three Rift Valley lakes of Shala, Abyata and Langano. 03. Continue driving to Arbaminch, in Amharic meaning 40 springs. Admire very interesting views and the Wolayta people, their villages, culture, the cultivation of the false banana tree (from which roots they extract their traditional bread, the Kotcho) and more. Afternoon drive to Chencha, to visit the Dorze people, their particular weaving works for which they are famous, strange houses, cultivation of sorghum and the false banana and more. 05. Drive to Turmi, crossing the Konso and Derashe people and villages, with particular culture, traditions, way of life and more. They are famous also for their terracing style agriculture. Continue so crossing Tsemay and Erbore people and villages. They have very colorful hairstyles, way of dressing and living quite peculiar. Continue to the village of Turmi, of the Hammer people. Dinner and O/N Turmi camping or at extra cost at the tented bungalows of the Evangadi lodge and campsite.[ according to market days, program can be varied by driving first to Jinka].
06. Visit Hamer people, their villages, possibly some dances, and more. If possible we look for the unique marriage ceremonies, with women slashing, bull jumping and more. If the day you arrive is MON or SAT admire the very colorful markets of the Hamer, Karo and Dassanech tribes respectively at Turmi or Dimeka villages. These tribes are famous for their hairstyles, ornaments, scarification, culture and more. O/N Turmi.
07. Drive to Omorate, at bank of Omo River, to admire the Dassanech villages. If more than one (1) Vehicle, excursion to the Turkana Lake at border of Kenya can be added. Back for dinner and O/N Turmi.
08. Drive to the Karo people and villages. Visit Kortcho village, with very nice views over Omo River, as Duss village. Dinner and ON Murulle camping, at bank of Omo River or near a village.
09. Continue for the Mago Park and camp at bank of the Neri River, admiring different animals, among which different antelopes and birds. O/N camping.
10. Proceed to the Mursi people and villages. Admire these tribes. Where for beauty women use to put clay plates into their lips, men have different scarification and more particularities, visit their way of life in the villages and other. Continue to Jinka village for dinner and O/N local hotel.
11. Continue to Konso, admiring the Ari, Benna and Tsemay people. If market days visit very colorful ones on the way. Visit then Konso famous villages and traditions. ON Konso Edget or St Mary hotel (local 2*).
12. Continue for the Borena people and afternoon drive to Elsod crater, from where Borena men extract salt. Visit some of their villages. O/N Yabelo local htl or camp.
